It is September and the first DT (Deception Tour) weekend presents itself. This year I will be there all three weekends together with Alwin. A few weeks ago I booked a hotel for the weekend from Thursday till Sunday. The late boat at 19:00 on Thursday was taken and Alwin took the boat on Friday morning.

The Botney Cut Experience

A full day on the open sea in September, that looked good. Together with Thijs Fijen, Pieter and Maartje we booked the trip that began on Thursday evening September 5. The ship "De Dageraad" sailed at night to the place of destination , the Botney Cut located on the Continental Shelf about 50 miles west of the Wadden Islands . The tour lasts until Saturday morning 6am so you're a full day at sea to spot seabirds. The trip is organized by Pterodroma Adventures and is appropriately called "The Botney Cut Experience".

Red-footed Falcon en Long-tailed Jaeger at Texel

The reports that arrived Saturday from Texel were not wrong. Barred Warbler, Ortolan Bunting and Greenish Warbler were sufficient enough to spent Sunday on the island. With dense fog I left Uden and at 6 am I stood in Huizen where Pieter and Maartje were already waiting for me. Fortunately the fog lifted as we drove further north and perfect on time we arrived at the ferry.

Weekend of month listing

With not many other options, together with Pieter a list of target species is compiled for the month list that we want to do this weekend. Should there be an interesting bird report then we will go there. The list consists of the following types: Black Kite, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Central European Treecreeper, Firecrest, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Tundra Bean Goose, Bullfinch, Purple Sandpiper and Nightingale. Many species can be done in Limburg so we start there on Saturday.

Daytrip to the north

A Terek Sandpiper and Broad-billed Sandpiper in the Breebaartpolder lured us for a day trip to the north. There were also some other nice species and beside Pieter and Maartje also Dirk Eijkemans wanted to join us. At 6 o'clock in the morning he arrived in Uden and together we drove to Huizen to pick up Pieter and Maartje. The first location to visit was the Zuidlaardermeer for the Whiskered Terns which for Dirk are still new in the Netherlands. On the way we suffered from some drizzle but on arrival at the Zuidlaardermeer it was cleared.

A day of month listing Limburg

A new month and both Pieter and I still needed quite a few species for the month list in Limburg. A list was drawn up with the following target species: Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Firecrest, Marsh Tit, Grey Wagtail, Eurasian Eagle-Owl, Black Kite, Eurasian Treecreeper, European Serin, Wood Warbler, Coal Tit, Tundra Bean Goose and Crested Lark. Enough to do so we left early from Uden to try the Grey Wagtail at St Oedenrode, which was found immediately on arrival.

Trip to the province of Zeeland

With not many options in the Netherlands we chose today for the province of Zeeland with the aim of a Zitting Cisticola in the Drow-photo-3ned Land of Saeftinghe. Then we would continue in Zeeland and wait for an interesting sighting somewhere in the Netherlands. Along with Pieter and Maartje we arrived in the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe around 9 am.

Squacco Heron in the Zuidlaardermeer

Saturday late in the afternoon a Squacco Heron was found in Groningen. The bird sat in the Zuidlaardermeer what happened to be scheduled for Sunday for the Whiskered Terns, hopefully the bird was still present. With Pieter and Maartje we left around half past five in Huizen.
