A new yearlist and of course that includes a visit to Limburg. About 8 o’clock we met Alwin and Christian in a parking place at the A50 just passed Eindhoven. First objective was the Enci Quarry at the St Pietersberg in Maastricht.
January is the month to give the year list a good start. Almost every year there are rare birds left that we visit. This also goes for the White-throated Dipper who's been a while in the Waterleidingduinen. We can combine this with a round of North Holland.
Saturday, January 1st for the third time we held a Big Day. Once again, the destination was the province of Zeeland. 92 species were scored in 2009 and last year we had 103 species on the list. After a short night sleep of less than 4 hours I left at 6.30 pm.
The year 2010 turned out to be a good birding year for me. The desire to see 300 species in the Netherlands has been successful and my trips to Ethiopia and Morocco were extraordinary. Every year I try to score 300 species in the Netherlands.
An Eagle Owl and a Corn Bunting was missing on the year list so a visit to Limburg was planned. The Eagle Owl was seen In the Enci quarry near Maastricht and the Corn Buntings were reported at the Hamster Sanctuary Sibbe last week. For the months list I had to do the Middle Spotted Woodpeckerso this could also be tried.
Almost a month a Richard's Pipit is reported at the Hondsbossche Zeewering. It seemed possible to photograph the bird and we could combine it with a round of the province North-Holland. With a well-filled car, Luuk Wassenberg, Teun van Kessel and Koen Rovers, we left early from Uden.
Today I did not have to get up early. In the morning I had no time to go birding but in the afternoon I had a few hours. Enough time to visit a White-throated Dipper that has been reported for some time in Zandvoort.
In Leidschendam all week a Red Phalarope was reported all week. I do not have this bird on the year list so a visit was scheduled. Jan Verhoeven, Koen Rovers and Luuk Wassenberg wanted to join me so it was agreed that at seven in the morning we would leave. Alwin also came along and he drove straight to Leidschendam.
